With the walks to morning lectures now accompanied by crisp leaves, Rutgers students know that can only mean one thing: football season.

With the Rutgers football team on a four-game winning streak, it's time to gather with friends, enjoy great food and cheer on the Scarlet Knights at SHI Stadium.

Here's The Daily Targum's guide to achieving the best tailgating experience possible.

Reserve a spot in a tailgating lot

Rutgers allows tailgating at their public parking lots, which open five hours before kickoff. While students can secure season parking, single-game parking is available now on a first-come, first-served basis for as little as $36.

It's important to reserve a spot as early as possible, as spaces fill up quickly, especially for big games. Students should be sure to review the guidelines for tailgating, including any restrictions on food, beverages and equipment to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Claim your student ticket

One of the biggest perks of being a Rutgers student is that you can claim a free ticket through the Rutgers Athletics website

The process begins by logging into a Rutgers account using University credentials, NetID and password, to access exclusive student and guest ticket offerings. After navigating to the football schedule, students can select the specific game of interest and follow the prompts to claim the tickets.

Once the ticket claim process is completed, a confirmation email will be sent with the ticket details, which can be added to Apple Wallet for quick access.

For those who want to maximize the game day experience, purchasing the student season tickets package is an option, available as early as the preceding spring semester. This package secures a spot for all home games, a worthwhile investment for the biggest fanatics.

Prep appetizers, lunch and drinks

No Rutgers tailgate is complete without a selection of mouth-watering food.

Chips and dips are a classic option — consider pairing it with buffalo chicken dip, guacamole, salsa or hummus for a crowd-pleasing snack.

Or, if you're hungrier, grab easy-to-prepare or pre-made sandwiches and wraps. Students can order from Jersey Mike's Subs located in the Yard @ College Avenue or head to any nearby grocery store to mix it up with an affordable variation of meats, cheeses and vegetables to cater to different dietary restrictions.

Don't forget about sweet treats! Consider brownies or cookies, mini versions if possible, to make sharing with friends and family easier.

For students who are off-campus residents or commuters, an inexpensive slow cooker can be a lifesaver for warm dishes like chili or meatballs, keeping everything hot and ready throughout the day.

While tailgating, staying hydrated is key. Bring a variety of soft drinks, preferably single-use, as outside liquids and reusable bottles are not permitted upon entry.

Additionally, all trash should be discarded before entering the stadium.

Prioritize comfort and fun

Comfort and fun are crucial for enjoying any tailgate. Consider bringing blankets or portable chairs to provide cozy seating for friends.

If the weather is sunny or rainy, propping the trunk open and having a canopy or large umbrellas can create a nice, dry and shaded area.

When the gameday energy starts to dip, bring out the fun activities.

Cornhole is a tailgating favorite that encourages friendly competition among friends, but for those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere or don't have access to lawn games, students should bring a deck of cards or travel-sized games for some casual fun.

Even tossing around a football or frisbee is a great way to bond with fellow fans and get everyone involved in the spirit of the game.

Show Scarlet Pride

Enhance the tailgating experience by showing off some Rutgers pride!

Adhere to all the game themes, whether it's White Out, Scarlet Out, Blackout or Military Appreciation Day, all of which are email blasted to students and posted on the Rutgers Football Instagram account.

Rutgers gear can be purchased on the College Avenue campus at Barnes & Noble at Rutgers or Scarlet Fever on Somerset Street.

Before entering the student section, students should consider taking team spirit a step further by walking around the Rutgers Boardwalk, which features food vendors and carnival games, or catching the Scarlet Walk, where the football team makes their way to the stadium.

Live in the Moment

Tailgating at the birthplace of college football is all about bringing the Rutgers community together to celebrate the unique school spirit that defines the State University of New Jersey.

As the season unfolds, especially with the highly anticipated game against Wisconsin on October 12, students should gather friends, pack essentials and get ready to cheer on the Scarlet Knights as they take the field!
