Feeling chilly? Beat boredom on campus with these fun indoor activities
As the winter chill begins to set in, it's time for campus hangouts to move inside. While most of us may end up getting a head start on assignments or scrolling through TikTok, there are plenty of other ways to pass the time without getting too cold.
To help you decide what to do, The Daily Targum has compiled a list of some enjoyable indoor activities that you can engage in to stay warm and relax before winter break.
Rutgers Cinema
At Rutgers Cinema, located on Livingston campus, student tickets run for as low as five dollars for a matinee and eight dollars for an evening show. Grab a bucket of warm, buttered popcorn or a free slushie on Wednesdays and escape the cold weather with one of the theater's latest selections. With your favorite snacks, your most comfortable sweatpants and an impressive sound system, what's better than a cozy movie night?
State Theatre New Jersey
If movies aren't your thing, try watching a live performance at State Theatre New Jersey, located at 15 Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick. Established in 1921, the State Theatre has housed plays, musicals, concerts and plenty of other live events for more than 100 years.
This holiday season, the State Theatre is hosting a number of shows, including "The Muppet Christmas Carol in Concert with New Jersey Symphony" and "The Nutcracker" in collaboration with the American Repertory Ballet. Check out their full list of season offerings, and purchase your tickets in advance to ensure you get the best seat in the house.
Roosterspin Karaoke
If you'd rather be the one commanding the stage, check out Roosterspin, a Korean restaurant and karaoke spot located at 120 Albany Street in New Brunswick. Open every day of the week, Roosterspin is the place to go if you're searching for the perfect karaoke experience near campus.
Roosterspin has offered private karaoke rooms since 2016, including their NYC room that holds 12 people and their jazz room that accommodates up to 20. While walk-ins are generally accepted, it's recommended that if you're planning on going with a large group, you should book a reservation by phone.
Grab your friends, make the perfect playlist and get ready to sing your hearts out!
Rutgers Recreation and Fitness Centers
If you're on TikTok, there's a chance you've heard about the concept of the winter arc — the idea of using the last few months of the year to get a head start on your wellness goals. If that appeals to you, check out the Rutgers recreation and fitness centers, offered on every campus. This time of year, there's nearly nothing as satisfying as finishing a workout indoors and being hit with the cold winter air as soon as you step outside.
Whether it's lifting weights at the College Avenue Gymnasium or playing volleyball at the Cook/Douglass Recreation Center, the Rutgers fitness centers are a great way to explore campus and find a type of exercise that not only works for you, but also encourages you to return after winter break.
Board Games and Cards
Last but not least, no indoor activity beats playing a good, old-fashioned board game with friends. From Monopoly to Cards Against Humanity, the possibilities of what you can play are endless. Even just a simple deck of traditional playing cards can open the door to dozens of games, like Kent and Pig, no matter how many people you're playing with.
If you don't have a deck of cards, don't be afraid to go back to the basics. Charades is a great crowd-pleaser, alongside get-to-know-you games that don't require equipment, like Two Truths and a Lie, Would You Rather or 20 Questions. Unplug with your friends for a few hours and dive deep into whatever conversations these games lead you to.
Harsh temperatures are already upon us, but with our list of indoor activities, you'll be more than equipped to endure the chilly weather. Stay warm and have fun!
