A new semester means a fresh start and unlimited opportunities. While it can be easy to get caught up in the stress of the new school year, students may engage in "doomscrolling" as a way to cope with changing seasons and schedules.

Hours spent constantly updating social media feeds can feel like seconds for some, but instead of getting caught in a loop of funny cat videos, why not try these productive activities to kickstart the academic year?

Pick Up A New Hobby or Skill

Campus is an exciting place to be surrounded by hundreds of other students involved in various activities. While in a learning environment, try challenging yourself to pick up a new skill set.

There are tons of opportunities to learn different skills while on campus. The Learning Centers offer Academic Success Workshops that provide students with motivation and resources for study groups. The workshops are a great way to learn new skills and meet new people.

Hit the Gym

If you haven't already done so, check out one of the Rutgers gyms. They offer plenty of equipment for gym rats and beginners, along with free workout classes for all Rutgers students. The RURec2Go app is one way to keep track of the fitness classes available, or you can visit the Rutgers Recreation website for more information and resources.

Some of the classes that are offered include pilates and spinning. If you're new or anxious about going to the gym, the fitness classes are one way to get started. Bring a friend or explore the fitness centers by yourself, whatever keeps you motivated and healthy!

Go on a walk and explore New Brunswick

If going to the gym is not for you, simply going on a walk or running outdoors is another great way to stay active during the school year. During these fall months, try to bask in the changing weather and admire the falling leaves on a leisurely walk or a morning run.

Buccleuch Park is located right off the College Avenue campus and has an expansive walking pathway that serves both Rutgers students and New Brunswick residents. Take advantage of Passion Puddle, located between the Cook and Douglass campuses, and take a scenic walk to explore the fall foliage in your free time. Visit the Ecological Preserve on Livingston campus and discover the habitats of various plant and animal species during your walk.

Head to the city

Need an escape from campus life? New Brunswick Station is conveniently located right off the College Avenue campus, near the University Center at Easton Avenue. With how easy it is to access New York City by train, plan for a day trip's worth of activities to spend a weekend away from campus.

Explore the beauty of Central Park, or walk the High Line which is only about 15 minutes from Penn Station. The city offers plenty of free activities that are well worth your time.

Catch a movie at Rutgers Cinema

Interested in viewing the latest films but can't make the drive to the nearest theater? Well, the Rutgers Cinema is open to Rutgers students at a special rate with a valid student ID. RU Cinema offers special promotions just for students, so be sure to take advantage of their amazing deals.

On Mondays, candy is available for $2.50, on Tuesdays, small popcorn and soda are $5 and on Wednesdays, treat yourself to free slushies. These deals are absolutely worth it, so go ahead and enjoy a fantastic time at the movies!

Stay Up To Date with RUPA

The Rutgers University Programming Association (RUPA) is dedicated to offering diverse programming for all members of the Rutgers community. Students are encouraged to attend these free and inclusive events provided by RUPA as a way to interact with peers on campus, and there's never a dull moment during these happenings.

RUPA is your go-to for engaging activities and unforgettable moments at Rutgers. Be on the lookout for the Rutgers Scarlet Days of Service on October 5, to participate in a meaningful day of volunteering and giving back to the community.

Whether you follow all these suggestions or just choose a few, remember to keep track of your screen time and focus on living in the present. It's easy to get drawn into the mesmerizing reels on your devices, but make an effort to fully experience everything Rutgers has to offer. These four years pass by quickly, so make the most of your time on the banks of the Raritan!
