Biggest reveals from this year's New York Comic-Con
New York Comic Con returned to Manhattan this year from October 12 to October 15. Held at the Jacob K. Javits Center, the event has been a yearly tradition dating back to 2006, only missing 2020 as a result of the pandemic.
In addition to exorbitantly expensive photo-ops with some of Hollywood's biggest stars, this year's showcase featured a slew of exciting announcements from some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. Here's a list of some of the event's coolest highlights.
First look at "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off"
To commemorate the upcoming release of Netflix's reboot of the cult classic "Scott Pilgrim" franchise, series creator Bryan Lee O'Malley joined the show's executive producer BenDavid Grabinski for two panels. The events included an autographing session where those in attendance got a signed animation frame from the show and an informational panel, where fans were treated to an exclusive look at the show's production process, as well as the debut of a new trailer and the show's introductory sequence.
"Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is being animated by the renowned anime studio Science Saru, which has been responsible for such titles as "Star Wars: Visions" and "Devilman Crybaby." As 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the original "Scott Pilgrim" graphic novel, O'Malley also took the opportunity to announce a special edition hardcover boxed set release of the book series, courtesy of Oni Press.
According to the listing's Amazon page, buyers can expect redesigned covers for each of the books, an exclusive compilation of "Making of Scott Pilgrim" comics and extras, a sticker sheet and a clamshell box to house everything, featuring art from O'Malley himself. The collection is currently available for pre-order and is slated for release on July 9, 2024, for $250.
"Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is set to debut on Netflix on November 17.
"Star Wars" comics release dates
Although many may associate the world-renowned galaxy far, far away with its better-known cinematic form, "Star Wars" has enjoyed moderate success across any number of entertainment mediums, including TV shows, video games and comic books. At its panel hosted by creative director Michael Siglain, Lucasfilm Publishing provided updates on what fans can expect from the comics in the first few months of 2024.
The finale of Ethan Sacks' "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter" series is set to release in January 2024, and a new story titled "Star Wars: Thrawn Alliances" will debut the following month. Marc Bernardin's series focusing on Mace Windu will launch, aptly titled "Star Wars: Mace Windu," featuring the titular Jedi's adventures prior to the Clone Wars as he explores a new scientific discovery that may hold dire consequences for the galaxy.
On March 20, 2024, fans of Ethan Sacks will be happy to know the author will be returning with a new series focused around Jango Fett, titled "Star Wars: Jango Fett." Although very few plot details have been revealed, fans can expect to see "Aurra Sing" appear throughout the story.
Marvel's "Next Big Thing" panel
Arguably the most eventful panel at this year's convention was Marvel Entertainment's "Next Big Thing" showcase. Hosted by the company's editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski, the event featured several teasers for upcoming titles, such as a trailer for the second issue of its newly released "GODS" series.
The show also featured several reveals for new series as well, including three new "ultimate" comic lines, each starring "Spider-Man," "Black Panther" and the "X-Men" — set to release in early 2024.
Capping things off, "Moon Knight" author Jed MacKay took the stage to announce his newest project, "Blood Hunt." Although few details were given, attendees were treated to this trailer, as well as the promise that the series will heavily feature vampires, as MacKay explained, "We've got the Avengers, Moon Knight's Midnight Mission, Doctor Strange, Miles Morales and, of course, Blade, and there's going to be more vampires than you can shake a stick at."
