Every Swiftie playlist should have these deep cuts
Taylor Swift has been breaking countless records since the release of her 10th studio album "Midnights". In addition Ticketmaster faced historic demand for her upcoming tour, the Eras Tour.
While Swift does have some phenomenal singles and radio hits that are known worldwide, some of her absolute best songs come from the other tracks on her albums. Non-single album tracks, better known as deep cuts, are songs on an artist’s album that are generally more obscure since they’re not commercially successful singles you’d hear on the radio.
In preparation for her upcoming tour, let’s look at some of my favorite deep cuts from Swift’s various albums. If you’re a new fan, I highly recommend all of these songs as a starting point for a deep dive into Swift’s discography.
"Haunted" from the album "Speak Now (Deluxe Edition)"
"Haunted" is an absolute classic. From the intense orchestral instrumentation to the lyricism and Swift’s passion in her vocal delivery, this song is truly phenomenal. It’s a perfect song to blast in the car when you want to feel like the main character in a dramatic romance movie.
"All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" from the album "Red (Taylor’s Version)"
While this song is not technically a deep cut anymore, the original version of "All Too Well" was considered lesser known for almost 10 years. The track has since been revamped with the re-recording of Swift’s 2012 album "Red," breaking it into the mainstream with the new extended version and its accompanying short film. This song is forever a classic and deserved a spot on this list despite its newfound fame.
"Clean" from the album "1989 (Deluxe Edition)"
One of my favorite tracks on Swift’s 2014 album "1989," "Clean" is truly a masterpiece. This song has some of my favorite lyrics from Swift, comparing being clean to finding yourself again after leaving a relationship and living in an endless cycle of heartbreak. It’s such a beautiful song in terms of both its instrumentation and writing and is an absolute must.
"Getaway Car" from the album "reputation"
One of my all-time favorite songs from Swift’s discography on one of my favorite albums, "Getaway Car" is the perfect story-based song. Detailing a doomed romance while comparing it to a Bonnie and Clyde criminal dynamic makes for a compelling track and a part of what makes it so memorable. It's a great fit to add to any road trip playlist.
"False God" from the album "Lover"
One of my favorite songs on her seventh studio album "Lover," "False God" is an amazing song. The lyrics use religious imagery to paint a picture, that some people think is of Swift’s current relationship with long-time boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
It portrays their relationship as something greater than themselves. This song is a great track with a different feel from the other songs in her discography.
"peace" from the album "folklore (deluxe version)"
"peace" is one of my favorite songs on "folklore" and in Swift’s discography in general. It discusses the implications of the pressure that Swift’s fame puts on her love life.
The song focuses on Swift's anxieties surrounding her boyfriend Alwyn wanting to leave her due to her crazy life and the lack of privacy she has as a public figure. Its calming vibe and heartwarming lyrics make this track a must listen.
"marjorie" from the album "evermore (deluxe version)"
A heartbreakingly beautiful yet comforting song, "marjorie" details the words of wisdom Swift received from her late grandmother, Marjorie Finlay. The song even features a gorgeous sampling of Finlay's voice from her days as a professional opera singer.
With such beautiful instrumentation and phenomenal lyrics, "marjorie" is the perfect song for the vibe of the colder fall months. If you’ve never listened, it's an absolute must.
Though often ignored, a lot of the under appreciated tracks by Swift offer the best examples of her brilliant lyricism and unique sounds. Any seasoned Swiftie or newbie should have some, if not all, of these songs on their playlists ready to sing out at the Eras Tour.
