On Wednesday, University Hospital in Newark and the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School announced the establishment of the Weight Management Center, which will provide services for patients dealing with obesity and struggling with weight management, according to a press release

The center, opening in the Doctors Office Center at University Hospital, consists of a multidisciplinary team of specialists, who will address various causes of obesity as well as health complications and develop well-rounded treatment plans for patients.

Obesity may develop from various factors, including those that are genetic or environmental, and requires an equivalently complex approach to its treatment.

Ed Jimenez, president of University Hospital, said the multidisciplinary approach to treating weight management will result in better patient care and support.

The center will also provide access to University Hospital's surgical program, where eligible patients may receive different weight loss surgeries based on their eligibility. The hospital's usage of robotic surgery will reduce incision size, risk of infection and hospitalization time.

"The goal behind a collaborative center is to help shift the paradigm in how we approach a condition as complicated as obesity," Dhvani Doshi, the medical director of the center, said. "With combined expertise from multiple specialties and a broad spectrum of treatment options for obesity, the center will ensure all patient needs are met from the beginning to the end."
