Upcoming on Netflix: What you missed from September's Tudum announcements
September 24, was an exciting day for Netflix fans. The fourth Tudum: A Global Fan Event was live-streamed worldwide, showcasing release dates and exclusive clips and teasers for both new and returning projects, creating an extreme amount of hype across social media.
As a TV show and movie fiend myself, I’m absolutely thrilled about the new content we’re getting toward the later end of 2022 and early 2023! Here are some titles that many others and I are looking forward to.
“Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story”
Starting with one of the most anticipated series, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” acts as both a spinoff and a prequel to the ever-so-popular “Bridgerton,” where the character Queen Charlotte is a prominent force to be reckoned with. Unapologetic fans of the series, such as myself, were waiting a long time to see what would be announced after first hearing of its development last year.
Starring India Amarteifio as a young Queen Charlotte and Corey Mylchreest as a young King George, the almost 2-minute preview showcases Charlotte and George’s first meeting. Fans instantly enjoyed the banter and chemistry between the two leads and are excited to see their love story unfold.
The series, albeit set in a fictional world with fictional characters, is slightly based on the real Queen Charlotte and King George. It is set to focus on her rise to the throne and the couple’s relationship. Viewers will also see younger versions of other beloved “Bridgerton” characters such as Violet and Lady Danbury.
I have to say this might be my favorite announcement out of my selected few. Partly because I’m a sucker for romantic escapism and partly because I’m truly looking forward to what writer and producer Shonda Rhimes has up her sleeve.
“Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” is set to premiere in 2023.
“You”
Everyone’s favorite serial killer is back! (I’m being ironic, I swear!) After a rather tumultuous ending to the show’s third season last October, it was announced that season 4 of the thriller will be back in two parts, a new format popularized by this summer’s “Stranger Things” season 4. Part 1 will be hitting the service on February 10, while part 2 will release a month later on March 10.
In a date announcement teaser, Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg seems to be taking on a fake persona yet again as Professor Jonathan Moore. The clip features a returning glimpse of character Marienne from its previous season, along with other appearances from new characters that will certainly catch Joe in some shenanigans.
“You” is a show that always surprises me. I’ve never been more curious about the state of its story as I am now. Viewers will have to wait and see, but either way, to both Netflix and showrunner Sera Gamble’s delight, people will be tuning in!
“Wednesday”
I have been anxiously waiting for a release date for “Wednesday” ever since the initial teaser dropped this August.
In this exclusive clip from the event, which announces its November 23 premiere, title character Wednesday Adams of “The Addams Family” is battling “Thing” — a magical hand who she seems to have a rather complicated relationship with.
The show is neither a reboot nor a remake and will take a new approach, according to the series’ showrunners and executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.
The plot will follow Wednesday attending a new school and getting involved with murder and supernatural mysteries. So even though fans of the classic movies will most likely be set to watch, the new premise along with the talent and appeal of star Jenna Ortega will be able to attract people who aren’t as familiar.
Along with additional performances from Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán and former Wednesday Addams Christina Ricci, I don’t doubt that viewers will be snapping along with every episode.
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”
Rian Johnson’s 2019 mystery “Knives Out” garnered great critical reception and popularity, so it only made sense for a sequel to be in the works. Once again packed with a star-studded cast, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” will be released on the streaming service on December 23.
Although this is a standalone film and doesn't contain any of its previous main characters or storyline, Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc will return taking on a new mystery. Miles Bron, portrayed by Edward Norton, invites his friends for a weekend on his private Greek island to play a murder mystery game, where viewers can only imagine what might happen next.
Tudum teased fans with a first look in this clip presented by Johnson where a few characters, played by Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Dallas Roberts and Madelyn Cline receive the invitation in a fun and mischievous way.
“Knives Out” was one of my favorite films of 2019, and I believe many can say the same. I have high hopes that its sequel will bring something new to the table while still surprising and impressing audiences.
“Dead to Me”
Last but certainly not least is a rather underrated show that needs more love from general audiences: "Dead to Me." With another returning season announcement for the event, the third and final season of the show will be arriving on November 17, shown in its official teaser.
“Dead to Me” is a dark comedy that follows two women, Jen (Christina Applegate) and Judy (Linda Cardellini) who deal with grief, betrayal, murder, relationships and almost everything in between.
It's been more than two years since its last season which ended on a wild cliffhanger. I can only wonder what creator Liz Feldman has in store to wrap up the story.
Out of all the Tudum announcements, this is one of the earliest arrivals, so if you’re looking for a new show to watch, I would highly recommend checking out its first two seasons just in time to indulge in its final episodes.
Happy watching!
