More than 1,000 flock for U.’s first Color Me RU

Students, faculty and staff gathered in all-white attire this Friday with plans to be saturated with six different colors for the University’s first Color Me RU run on Livingston campus. “Dream Riders,” members of the Dream4TK organization, will bike from New Brunswick to Orlando, Fla. as a part of an initiative to raise $1 million for the Embrace Kids Foundation this summer. Elijah’s Promise, a soup kitchen in downtown New Brunswick, serves over 100,000 meals a year to its community members. To help raise funds for this service and awareness about hunger and food justice, the nonprofit is joining with Iguana Music tonight to kick off their first annual four-day Hub City Music Festival. Professor addresses issues with youth’s moral values

Professor Richard Miller, who has performed numerous case studies about the events surrounding the life and death of Tyler Clementi, believes it is the role of the University to produce people with moral values and the capacity to focus on things outside of themselves. The first annual Tyler Clementi Center Humanities Lecture, “Growing Up Digital: Embodied Experience in the Virtual Age” took place on Friday on Douglass campus and featured Miller discussing youth and morality. Having lived in New Jersey as a young adult and struggled with difficult economic times, State Senator Barbara Buono said she knows how to represent and fight for working and middle-class people in her campaign during this year’s gubernational election. Someone on campus must have taken an apple from the Tree of Knowledge, because the University is planning to shut down the Eden email network on July 1, 2014 and replace it with ScarletApps. Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers-Camden will also see their respective email services, Pegasus and Clam, deactivate on the same date. Provided by Google Apps for Education, ScarletApps will allow students to access Google’s collaborative services, such as document sharing and calendars through their University email addresses, said Keri Budnovitch, associate director in the Office of Information Technology. City to include park area for skaters

Luis Rivera has faced difficulties in finding places to skate because it’s easy for skaters to get ticketed with the various regulations and restricted areas for skateboarding. But that’s about to change. Skateboarders no longer need to worry about hassle from police and city residents — New Brunswick hopes to build a skate park before the end of the year. Russell Marchetta, New Brunswick’s city spokesman, said the skate park is an addition to renovations at Recreation Park on Pine Street. Mar 6 2013

Cuts in psychology impact exam format

Responding to budget issues, the University’s Department of Psychology has decided to experiment with conducting exams online, replacing the more costly Scantron sheets. Some professors have successfully conducted their exams online, but others have run into significant problems that have provoked mixed responses from students, said Lee Jussim, chair of the Department of Psychology. The University’s new mobile food truck, the Knight Wagon, will not only deliver hot meals all over campus, but is also planning to accept meal swipes. Debuting in two weeks, the Knight Wagon will travel to all five campuses, serving a variety of foods that are in the University’s dining hall, said Nicholas Emanuel, assistant director of Dining Services. The family of Tyler Clementi, along with elected officials, announced the creation of the Tyler Clementi Center yesterday — a collaboration that will be used to facilitate a change in dealing with youth, particularly within the LGBTQ community. The center will serve as a collective between the University and the Tyler Clementi Foundation and will address LGBTQ issues through training sessions, lectures and events, said Susan Furrer, co-director of the Tyler Clementi Center. The announcement took place at the Rutgers University Visitor Center on the Busch campus. The center will be located in rented space on George Street in New Brunswick, according to nj.com. About 700 people filled the New Brunswick High School gymnasium Saturday to hear state Sen. Barbara Buono, D-18, announce her plan to challenge Gov. Atrium to test extended hours for pre-finals studying

The Rutgers University Student Assembly has successfully pushed for the Atrium in the Rutgers Student Center to stay open for extended hours tonight through Dec. 12 so students can start studying late a week before finals. RUSA pushed for the closing time change, from 1 to 4 a.m., after noticing the student body’s need to find a quiet place to study before finals, said Saad Shamshair, the RUSA chair of the academic affairs committee. Updates to bring class space to Tillett

To address the issue of classroom shortages on campus, the University is expanding Livingston Campus’ Tillett Hall with updated spaces for students. The renovations, which will cost a projected $13.5 million, are slated for a fall 2013 completion, said Antonio Calcado, vice president of University Facilities and Capital Planning. The alterations will transform the old cafeteria into 16 new, state of the art lecture halls and classrooms along with a few computer labs, Calcado said. Nov 28 2012
