For the second straight game, the Rutgers men’s soccer team was shutout in a tough defeat. The Scarlet Knights (4-9-2, 1-6-1) lost 2-0 to Washington on Friday night in a poor offensive performance.

Freshman forward Matty Lynch made his second consecutive start and freshman defender Scott Godden started his 14th game of the season.

The Huskies (7-4-5, 3-3-3) attempted the first shot of the night in the 11th minute, with junior goalkeeper Ciaran Dalton making his first of the game.

From then on, Washington never took its foot off the gas pedal. Chris Peretti found the back of the net in the 23rd to put the home team ahead.

It took 31 minutes for Rutgers to attempt a shot, but graduate student forward Ola Maeland could not place his effort on target.

The Huskies continued to push for the 2nd goal and led 1-0 at halftime. They outshot the Knights 12-1, forcing Dalton into five saves.

Just like the first half, the second was completely dominated by Washington. The Huskies put the game to bed with a consolation goal from Egor Akulov in the 88th minute.

Rutgers registered four shots in total, putting just one on target. Washington ended the night with a whopping 22 shots, tied for the most shots the Knights have allowed this season. Dalton ended the game with six saves.

Rutgers will head back to Yurcak Field on Busch campus for an uphill battle against Maryland, No. 2 ranked, on Tuesday. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. and be broadcast on Big Ten Plus and 88.7 WRSU-FM.
