Effective August, Rutgers—Newark Chancellor Nancy Cantor will begin her term as president of Hunter College, 1 out of 25 colleges in the City University of New York's (CUNY) academic network.

"I am deeply honored to join the CUNY family," Cantor said. "Hunter embodies all that I hope for — and all that I believe our moment requires of — higher education as a significant lever for social mobility and scholarship that reimagines our world to more genuinely and equitably spread opportunity, health, creative expression and civic empowerment."

In the same statement, Cantor said she was excited to hold a role that would allow higher education to serve the public good. She also noted that her parents are alumni of Hunter College and The City College of New York.

In August 2023, it was announced that Cantor's decade-long term as chancellor would end in June 2024, as previously reported by The Daily Targum. At that time, the University informed the Targum in a statement that Cantor would embark on paid leave for a year before determining whether to return as a tenured instructor.

A letter to University President Jonathan Holloway, which was signed by various Newark leaders when the end of Cantor's term was announced, credits Cantor with improving Rutgers' connection with the Newark community and bolstering its public safety, arts, local businesses and college enrollment rates.

Cantor will be succeeded for an interim period by Jeffrey Robinson, provost and executive vice chancellor of Rutgers—Newark, according to an announcement. Robinson's nomination was confirmed by the Rutgers Board of Governors during their meeting on Monday, as previously reported by the Targum.
