Winter Break 2023: Stuck on campus during break? Try these holiday hacks
Amid finals and end-of-semester stress, it can be hard to take a breather and remember that the holidays is approaching.
Getting into the holiday spirit can be especially daunting if you’re a student staying on campus during winter break, but you don’t have to feel lonely or bored during your well-deserved weeks off.
Here are some tips to feel holly-jolly while staying at Rutgers this winter break!
Seeing holiday shows at the State Theatre New Jersey
Nothing says the holidays more than a wonderful live show. Luckily for Rutgers students, the New Jersey State Theatre is just a bus trip or a short walk away from the College Avenue campus, located near the SoCam Apartments bus stop.
From December 15 to 17, the theater is showcasing the iconic holiday ballet show "The Nutcracker.” Later in the month, on December 29, they’re also presenting the high-energy and re-vamped “The Hip Hop Nutcracker.”
On New Year’s Eve, there is the "Salute to Vienna,” a classic singing and dancing concert that perfectly caps off the year.
Checking in with friends and family
This seems like a no-brainer but a huge part of the holidays is spending it with the people you love most. Catching up with friends or family after a busy semester is a perfect way to wind down. Even if it's a virtual chat, discussing holiday plans or simply expressing gratitude can really make one feel at home.
Set aside a few hours, schedule a phone call or Zoom session and share some fond holiday memories or what you’re hoping for in the new year. It’s easy to forget but quality time can truly be rewarding.
Watching comforting movies
As the weather gets colder, it only makes sense to check out the hottest movies on the big screen. Winter break is a great opportunity to catch up on all the movies you missed while studying.
Simply check what comforting holiday movies are on your favorite streaming platform or take a trip to Rutgers Cinema located on Livingston campus. Take advantage of discounted student tickets with your Rutgers ID.
The cinema remains open over winter break and can be an escape from any boredom you might face. The new Disney animated film “Wish” is currently playing, and soon “Wonka,” “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” and “The Color Purple” will be available to watch.
Eating at local New Brunswick restaurants
The holidays aren’t the same without delicious, home-cooked food. To get in the spirit over break, there are plenty of raved-about food spots on campus that remain open.
Only a few minutes away from The Yard @ College Avenue, there’s Fritz’s, a restaurant that features comfort food such as grilled cheese, tomato soup and fresh baked goods. Hidden Grounds Cafe, another nearby eatery, has a variety of hot drinks to keep you warm.
While being on campus during an academic recess can be intimidating, it can also serve as a perfect opportunity to explore New Brunswick.
