As The Daily Targum transitions to the next editorial board, members of the 154th Board reflect on their time as editors for this historic publication.

Isabella Tyszka, editor-in-chief: "I don’t think it would be dramatic to say that serving as the editor-in-chief here at the Targum during this past year has been the most transformative and rewarding part of my life thus far. When I first joined the Targum, I never dreamed that it would spark a passion within me and lead me to reconsider my planned career path since I was young.

"All of my life, I have planned to go into law and politics (hence, my choice of major — political science), and yet, after my time here, I must say that continuing with journalism/editing/publishing seems like the irrevocable choice. Beyond that, being able to curate and oversee content that Rutgers students truly care about, work that is timely and meaningful, speaking out against injustices here at our own University through editorials and special reports has been nothing short of wondrous.

"Even so, all of that pales in comparison to working and bonding with such a wonderful team. It’s been a true privilege and pleasure to be able to lead the Targum’s 154th editorial board, and I am confident that the next board will do equally great things."

Victoria Yeasky, managing editor: "I joined the Targum my first year at Rutgers, and it's hard for me to imagine a time without it in my life. From contributing writer to correspondent to head news editor to managing editor, I've held a lot of roles during my time here, and they each have taught me so much.

"I'm so grateful for all of the friends and memories I've made throughout my journey here, and I really don't know where I'd be today without the Targum. It's sad to think about my Targum journey coming to an end, but I will always hold a special place for it in my heart."

Astha Lakhankar, head news editor: "My time at the Targum as a news editor has been incredibly rewarding both personally and professionally. I’ve learned so much from working here, especially from the people around me — being part of this paper has been so special to me as a reporter, a Rutgers student and as a person. I’m looking forward to another year here."

Kithmy Wickramasinghe, associate news editor: "My time at the Targum has been really fulfilling and exciting thus far. I feel that I've grown immensely both as a person and as a writer/editor by being a part of the paper. As an associate news editor, I've gotten the chance to work with other incredibly talented individuals and to cover impactful stories. I'm excited for another year at the Targum — the 155th editorial board is very talented, and I'm looking forward to working with everyone next year."

Claire Bruno, associate news editor: "I have a lot to thank the Targum for! I’ve learned so many worthwhile skills from starting out as a contributing writer to completing a term as a news editor. Playing a role in sharing some of the most pertinent news stories to the Rutgers community has felt so meaningful to me, and it helped me shape my vision of what I want to accomplish in the future, and the work it takes to get there!"

Ricky Suta, opinions editor: "I am so grateful for my time at the Targum. It is crazy to think that we are part of this immense history at Rutgers — one that goes back to 1869 — while also being at the forefront of so much history being made. We covered the pandemic, the politics of our age, the treatment of labor at Rutgers: All of these things we had the privilege to cover, and in opinions, we gave voice to what students were thinking.

"My personal highlight was covering the Oslo Freedom Forum in New York, where issues of democracy, human rights and the free press came together to emphasize the importance of this work. Ultimately, I think our place both in the long history of the Targum and in documenting the making of history, leaves me really proud and honored to have been part of the 154th editorial board."

Dylan McCoy, head sports editor: "It’s hard to believe that two years have gone by so far. I’ve worked with so many great people and had awesome experiences covering sports on the Banks. I think I have grown as a person and a professional during this time, and I’m excited to see what the future holds. The future of the Targum is bright, and the 155th editorial board will do a great job in carrying the legacy of this publication forward."

Jack Bisaha, associate sports editor: "Reflecting at a time like this is not my greatest strength, but it has been a privilege to work at the Targum. I started just as any other new member would for the sports section in the middle of the pandemic year, now I am proud of how far I have come in those two short years. I was able to cover my favorite sport and my favorite team's greatest moments, including a famous half-court shot hit at the buzzer.

"I was also able to travel to the Big Ten Tournament, something that I will definitely remember forever. I could not have done everything that I did without the help of a lot of people, but particularly I want to thank my co-worker Dylan for being by my side through it all. I can't wait for the next chapter!"

Vy Nguyen, head copy editor: "It’s been such a privilege to have worked at the Targum for the past two years. I’ve met some of my best friends and worked on projects that I’m so proud to have contributed to, but more than anything, the Targum taught me the power and importance of independent, local journalism. I’m so excited and so, so proud to cheer on this next board in the coming weeks!"

Henry Wang, photography editor: "As a photographer and designer, I've always believed that visual work is most impactful when it communicates an idea or story. During my time at the Targum, I've come to appreciate the value of independent journalism, how it can provide open discussion for critical thinking for those who care. Looking forward, I wish the new board all the best. In my free time, I hope to continue to assist the Targum’s mission as a staff photographer!"

Chris Kim, head video editor: "I really enjoyed my time here at the Targum. I was able to go to events and create videos that weren't previously possible. I had so much fun creating videos here, and I got to make a bunch of new friends. I'm slightly sad that my term is ending. Now, I have to find other things to fill in the time.

"After being here for a year, I've made a lot of good memories in the office, but I'm excited to see what's next. I plan on continuing my video creation journey, but while I'm still here at Rutgers, instead of being in the Targum office, you will now find me on the ultimate frisbee field."

Jonny Berkowitz, associate video editor: "It's pretty crazy to me that I have been on board with the Targum since April 2021. That being said, I am extremely proud of my time as the associate video editor. I really enjoyed profiling clubs that interested me and interviewing some really cool people! Gonna miss my Targum friends! Here's to 155!"

Meredith MacLean, inside beat editor: "I’m so grateful for the opportunity I’ve been able to have editing at the Targum. Getting to explore my love of all things culture and entertainment while also getting to work on my editorial skills and get experience in a newsroom has been such a great time, and working with everyone in the office has been a really fun experience. Long live DT!"

Rachel Chang, social media editor: "My time at the Targum has allowed me to grow, and I have learned a significant amount that I can carry with me post-grad. I have made so many new friends and have great confidence in my trainee to continue my work."
