Don't close out your tab before you try these astrological drinks
Whether you’re out at Huey’s every weekend or have recently filled up your bar cart for hosting with friends, it’s no secret college students love to drink. But for those recently 21 or, who like me, have that hallmark Libra indecisiveness, picking your go-to drink at the bar can be a daunting task.
The next time you hit up your hometown bar, check out the new bougie cocktail spot in town or just want to try on your mixology hat, consider picking a drink that suits your astrological chart — your new favorite drink might be written in the stars!
Aries: spicy margarita
Spicy Aries, try a spicy marg! Aries are courageous, confident and determined, and if someone is starting the night with tequila, they’re certainly all those things. A spicy margarita offers bold flavor with hallmarks like jalapeños or Tajin. Any Aries worth their salt (rim) wants to consume and embody that extra kick, whether they’re hitting up their favorite Mexican food joint for dinner or feeling fancy at the bar.
Taurus: Irish coffee
Taureans love nothing more than comfort and the good things in life, usually veering a little less toward Michelin-starred tasting courses and more toward their favorite comfort food. And what’s more comforting than coffee … with whiskey?
This cocktail contains coffee, whiskey, sugar and heavy cream, but many people cut the middle man and mix in some Baileys Irish Cream with their coffee for a simpler DIY fix. No matter how you pour it, Irish coffee is just what a Taurus needs to unwind.
Gemini: Dirty Shirley
Some people might say Geminis are two-faced, but I like to think of them as multifaceted. And a Dirty Shirley is indeed that because no one can seem to decide whether it’s prepared with Ginger Ale, Sprite, 7-Up and so on and so forth.
But no matter what type of soda the bar (or you) choose to pour in with grenadine and vodka, the free-spirited and playful Gemini can get in touch with their inner child with this drink (because it’s literally a Shirley Temple that will get you drunk). Don’t forget the maraschino cherry!
Cancer: sangria
Whether you want red sangria or white sangria, homemade or from a can or bottle, sangria is a summertime staple that’s perfect for these summer babies. Cancers are homey but take a while to come out of their shell, so what could be better than a glass of your favorite fruit and wine to keep you in your comfort zone? Make it in a pitcher, and you'll be able to share it with the people you care about!
Leo: sex on the beach
Perfect for sipping literally on the beach as you laze in the sun or to give you liquid courage in the club, a sex on the beach isn’t embarrassing to order for the bold Leo — in fact, they might revel in the giggles of their drunk friends.
This fun, flirty drink is perfect for the Lion sign who is light-hearted, confident and loves to be the center of attention. The combination of peach schnapps, vodka and two different fruit juices means this drink isn’t hard to down and might also give you a sugar rush, which is just what a Leo needs to keep the party going.
Virgo: green tea shots
What better for a studious Virgo than tea?
Full disclosure: the green tea shot does not contain any actual tea. But it’s still the perfect drink for any Virgo on a night out!
Aside from being a common-shot deal on any menu that’ll give the sharp-minded Virgo a chance to be frugal, green tea shots go down easy. This is practical for keeping that Virgo poise — no I-just-took-a-shot cringe (change to pucker?) faces here.
Plus, the fact that it's a shot means you’ll have a fun night drinking these — everyone’s favorite August and September babies need to let loose sometimes!
Libra: Moscow mule
Is this a biased answer because I myself am a Libra, and a Moscow mule is my favorite drink? Maybe. But I am prepared to defend my decision!
The image-conscious and aesthetically minded Libra will love any opportunity to be drinking something that looks unique and stylish. So rocking the trademark copper cup instead of any other glass is one point in the mule’s direction. Other than that, the sweet-to-alcoholic-to-refreshing ratio of a good mule is perfectly balanced, making it an excellent pick for the equitable sign of the scales.
Scorpio: martini
Scorpios have the reputation of being a little intense, and isn’t a cocktail solely made of gin and vermouth pretty intense?
Scorpios are also mysterious, enticing and ambitious so it just makes sense to imagine a Scorpio sitting at the end of the bar, drinking a martini and having everyone else wonder about the intriguing stranger who’s grabbing everyone’s attention.
Are they an important CEO? An out-of-towner lost in a new city? A Rutgers communications major? Banksy? They’ll never know! And it’s all thanks to the martini in your hand, Scorpio.
Sagittarius: piña colada
Ever restless, the wanderlust filled Sagittarius will appreciate their little taste of island getaway by sipping on the piña colada. Sagittarians at Rutgers can imagine they’re at an all-inclusive Sandals Resort somewhere instead of at their apartment on Busch campus —wondering if the blender they used to make it was too loud and disturbed their roommates.
The novelty of sipping on a frozen drink and the fun flavors will enchant any adventurous Sagittarius that orders it.
Capricorn: old fashioned
Classy, cool and definitely something your Dad would like? Sounds Capricorn approved! The old fashioned is, well, an old fashioned (aka classic) cocktail, and keeping it simple and to the point is something Capricorns do best.
An old fashioned also hones in on the finer details while keeping things no-frills — you can handle your whiskey, thank you very much, but you’d like some sugar and an orange peel with that. It’s practical and not overpowering, and the little bit of added sweetness is perfectly reflective of a Capricorn's hidden soft side.
Aquarius: liquid marijuana
A liquid marijuana is basically a Long Island iced tea, except if it was trying to imitate Nickelodeon slime. This tropical-tasting drink has spiced rum, blue curacao, Malibu, melon liqueur, pineapple juice and sour mix, so it tastes very little like alcohol but is actually chock full of it — and is a pretty green color.
For the independent, unique Aquarius, the least traditional drink on this list is the only logical choice. Their approachable nature and good sense of humor means ordering a drink on the sillier side of the naming aisle is no problem.
Pisces: cosmopolitan
Dreamy, flighty and lovers of all things emotional, Pisces are not-so-secret romantics. And what better beverage for them than something bright-pink that’ll make them feel like they’re the fifth member of the "Sex and the City" troupe?
This iconic cocktail is relatively simple and sweet, but it’s sometimes considered on the fancier side. So while you might get some odd looks if you ask for it at your local college dive, anywhere else, it’s perfect in order for you to look cute, classy and not piss off your bartender with a super complicated drink. The dream for nonconfrontational Pisces, no?
There’s a moral of the story when it comes to bar hops and bar carts: If you like to drink, drink what you like. But if you’re not sure what you like quite yet and you’re hoping to branch out from vodka sodas and that MiO you snuck into Golden Rail Pub, then see if a new drink based on your sign might add some fun to your life.
Rumor goes your moon sign comes out most when you’re drunk — so if the drink assigned by your sun sign isn’t your speed, be sure to check that out too.
And remember that this list is a menu, not a checklist, so always drink responsibly!
