New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) will now offer discounted student passes to eligible part-time students for the first time, according to a press release.

Beginning in February, in addition to full-time students, part-time college students taking at least two courses are also eligible for a 25 percent discount on the NJ Transit monthly pass.

Participating colleges and universities include Rutgers, Drexel University, New York University and more than 70 schools in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

During the spring semester, students are also eligible for a "Buy 3 Months, Get 1 Free" program that saves students 60 percent compared to one-way ticket purchases.

Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, the New Jersey Department of Transportation commissioner, said the program's expansion to part-time students advances engagement to those dependent on public transportation in higher education.

"Expanding the program to include discounts for eligible part-time students is emblematic of NJ Transit's mission to enhance our services for all who wish to utilize public transportation," Gutierrez-Scaccetti said.
