Enjoy theatre's magic at home with these iconic movie musicals

The movie adaptation of "Les Misérables" might be controversial, but it's still worth a watch if you want to experience a bit of Broadway magic at home. – Photo by @quisma88 / Twitter

I don’t know about you, but Broadway musicals are some of my favorite things to watch. I grew up going to see many different shows throughout my life and participating in both my local theater and school productions of my favorite shows.

Musicals have always been a big part of my life, and I was raised in a family of Broadway lovers. As a result, I have developed some hot takes over the years as new shows have risen to fame following their opening nights.

I am personally not a fan of more modern musicals, solely due to the genre of music that is present in most of these shows. I will forever love the Broadway classics, known for their larger-than-life orchestration, storylines that tug at your heartstrings and out-of-this-world acting and singing performances.

Throughout the years, a multitude of big-screen adaptations have been made of famous broadway musicals, and I always tune in to watch. I take pride in having seen many of the classics such as "The Sound of Music," "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Grease," but I've also loved watching new adaptations of them over the years as they have premiered in theaters.

There's something so cozy and charming about curling up on the couch in comfortable clothes with blankets and fun snacks to watch a movie adaptation of your favorite Broadway musical. Nothing truly beats bringing the Broadway experience to the comfort of your own home.

Let’s look at some of my favorite movie adaptations of Broadway musicals, absolutely perfect for your next cozy night in.

"Les Misérables" (2012)

"Les Misérables" is a true classic and one of my absolute favorite musicals of all time. If you’ve never seen it, it’s a must-watch, and even if you believe you don’t like it, it’s genuinely worth another try.

With an all-star cast of phenomenal talents including Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen and Aaron Tveit, this film is stacked to the brim with some of the biggest and most talented names from Hollywood and Broadway.

The movie focuses on Jackman’s character, Jean Valjean, in 19th-century France. The film has several storylines pulled together by an out-of-this-world cast and phenomenal music. "Les Misérables" has some of my absolute favorite musical numbers of all time, and it’s all in all an amazing film.

"Les Misérables" is available to stream on Netflix.

"Into the Woods" (2014)

"Into the Woods" is another famously hit-or-miss movie with audiences. Some love it and praise its complexity, while others find it convoluted or boring.

This is another film that's driven by a phenomenal all-star cast including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, James Corden, Chris Pine and Lilla Crawford. The plot focuses on a multitude of classic fairytale storylines, but they all end up clashing together to create a beautifully complicated, charismatic and interesting watching experience.

The cast's performances, the gorgeous songs and the interpolation of classic fairytales make this film an absolute must-watch.

"Into the Woods" is available to stream on Disney+.

"Hairspray" (2007)

"Hairspray" is another classic modern musical movie. Filled with stars like John Travolta, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, James Marsden, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley, Queen Latifah and Brittany Snow.

The movie takes place in Baltimore during the 1960s and in the midst of segregation. The plot centers around Tracy Turnblad, a teen who absolutely loves to dance and wants to earn a spot on the famous "The Corny Collins Show." She is driven by her passion for dancing and her goal of bringing racial integration to the famously segregated teen dance show.

This movie is an absolute classic and truly such a fun time to watch. If you’ve never seen it, be prepared to have "You Can’t Stop the Beat" stuck in your head for the days to come.

"Hairspray" is available for purchase on Amazon Prime Video.

"Rent" (2005)

“Rent” is another absolute classic. With a phenomenal cast starring Idina Menzel, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Anthony Rapp, Taye Diggs, Adam Pascal, Tracie Thoms, Rosario Dawson and Jesse L. Martin, this cast has plenty of incredible talent at its core.

The film centers around the ensemble cast of struggling New Yorkers in the early 90s, working to keep their careers and love lives together while dealing with the effects that the AIDS epidemic is having on their community. It is inspiring, raw, emotional and such a journey to follow. If you’ve never seen it, it is an absolute must-watch.

"Rent" is available to stream on HBO Max.

Even if you can't make it to the local theatre or to Broadway to feel the buzz of a live performance, you can recreate it in your living room with one of these movie musicals that are definitely worth singing about.
