After a tough loss on Friday night at SHI Stadium on Busch campus, the Rutgers football team fired offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson today. Nunzio Campanile, who served as the interim head coach after Chris Ash’s firing, will be the interim offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

"This was a difficult decision, but I believe it is in the best interest of our program to make a change at offensive coordinator,” said head coach Greg Schiano in a statement released by the program. “I want to thank (Gleeson) for his hard work and wish he and his family all the best in their future endeavors.”

The Scarlet Knights (3-3, 0-3) have languished on offense this season, ranking in the bottom 25 in the nation in points, total yards, passing yards and red zone scoring rate. Rutgers has scored on less than 11 percent of its drives this season.

Gleeson was in his third season running the Knights’ offense, the first coach to remain offensive coordinator for multiple seasons in more than a decade for the program. He was the highest-paid assistant coach in Rutgers history and is a New Jersey native.

Campanile will have two weeks to prepare for the Knights’ next game when they host Indiana on October 22 for homecoming.
