NBPD awarded Street Smart Pedestrian Grant to improve driver, pedestrian safety

The Street Smart Pedestrian Grant was recently awarded to the New Brunswick Police Department, for use in increased patrols, high-visibility signs and community education.

As part of New Brunswick’s efforts to improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, the New Brunswick Police Department was recently awarded the Street Smart Pedestrian Grant, according to a press release.

The grant was awarded by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and will be used to improve community education and enforcement regarding dangerous driving behavior.

Specifically, the funds will enable increased patrols at high-volume crosswalks and intersections as well as high-visibility signs throughout the city, according to the release. In addition, a community education component will be implemented in houses of worship and schools.

“For over a decade, the city’s Complete Streets policy has guided the strategic planning to make New Brunswick safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists,” said Mayor Jim Cahill. “The city of New Brunswick is committed to policies that further opportunities to make the streets safer for users of all ages and all travel modalities.”
