Get weird with these strange roadside attractions on your next road trip
I’ve always been a huge fan of weird attractions — some of my best friends and I are always looking for things that might be weird or strange to visit all across the U.S. If you're traveling this spring break, I highly recommend that you visit some of the following attractions on your trip!
Are you in the South this spring break and looking for some free stuff? I would recommend checking out Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro, Alabama. This is the best place to thrift some items, with a unique twist — they buy "orphaned" bags and sell, donate and recycle their contents. You never know what you'll find. I, for one, would think of this place as the mall of cool things.
World’s Largest Chocolate Waterfall
Alaska is known to be a great place for cruise destinations, but they also have some spots that are cool to drive through. If you're in Anchorage, Alaska, visit the World's Largest Chocolate Waterfall! If you’re a chocolate lover, this is the place for you.
This chocolate fountain uses more than 3,000 pounds of chocolate heavenliness, and its creators also offer tours of the chocolate kitchens and have a gift shop.
Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Art Museum
This is the most bizarre place that I’ve seen so far. Located in The Colony, Texas, Smith shows off his art, all of which is painted on toilet seats. Originally, this idea was started in Smith's garage, but now, the museum is a popular tourist stop for travelers.
Located in Santa Cruz, California, the Mystery Spot is the perfect head-scratcher and mental illusion. This house is a "gravitational anomaly" that makes it seem like you're tilting due to the illusions that take place on the hill.
The closer you get to the center of the cabin, the more you feel like you're leaning. It was discovered in 1939 and opened to the public in 1941. It’s a great place to hang out with family, and it's also a fun place for children!
Looking for something closer by? In 1922, a mechanical engineer named Elis F. Stenman decided he wanted to build a house out of paper, just for fun. Some people are just so weird!
Now called the Paper House and found in the town of Rockport, Massachusetts, you can find everything from paper chairs to a paper piano at this weird attraction.
Tennessee is known for its country music and its hot chicken. How about we add some salt and pepper to that list, too?
An archaeologist in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, fell in love with collecting salt and pepper shakers and spent more than 35 years collecting more than 20,000 of them from all around the world.
She created the Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum, where you can see all the different types of sets that she collected that date all the way back to the 1500s and up to today.
World's Largest Chest of Drawers
In High Point, North Carolina, you'll find the world’s largest chest of drawers, standing at a whopping 36-feet tall. This chest of drawers even has socks sticking out of it!
While the drawers were originally built to call attention to the city as the building capital of furniture in the U.S., today it's a big photo stop for tourists from around the country.
While other states might produce plenty of corn or enjoy munching on it at summer barbeques, nowhere else has anything compared to a corn palace. South Dakota outranks every other state in that regard!
This bizarre attraction is located in Mitchell, South Dakota, and it's decorated in corn. Inside the fun palace, there are paintings and art, many of which are made out of corn themselves!
As for my spring break, I’m hoping that I can at least go to Massachusetts and see the Paper House as it seems like the coolest place off this list. For your own trips, I hope you can find a place that baffles you as much as the Mystery Spot did me. Good luck hunting!
