No. 10 Rutgers field hockey set to face No. 20 Monmouth, Delaware in weekend matchups
In an action-filled weekend, the No. 10 Rutgers field hockey team faces its fourth and fifth consecutive ranked opponents. Last weekend, the Scarlet Knights (4-1, 0-0) dropped their first game of the season, but also claimed victory in double overtime.
First matching up with No. 20 Monmouth, Rutgers looks to get its first home win of the season as the Hawks (4-2, 0-0) try to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Harvard in extra time. Monmouth’s new ranking is tied for their highest in program history.
Annick van Lange as well as Lorane Vanneste are a big part of the Hawks' nationally recognized start of the season. Each has 5 goals, two assists and has started in every game. Van Lange holds the team lead in shots with 26.
The duo’s scoring efforts are joined by Hanna McKie who has 3 goals and one assist. Ally Tarantino has started in net for 5 of the 6 games, making 16 saves and letting in 13 goals.
After the in-state rivalry match on Friday, the Knights are shifting their focus to Delaware. The Blue Hens (2-4, 0-0) have dropped their last three games, with their last effort being a 3-0 loss against No. 9 Penn State. Leading the team with five assists is Ashlyn Carr. Femke Strien has a goal and an assist while leading Delaware with 23 shots and 11 on net.
Lizzie Gaebel has played the entirety of the Blue Hens’ season in goal. She has made 26 saves, but 11 balls have gotten past her.
Freshman midfielder Lucy Bannatyne leads the attack for Rutgers and scored a game-winner in double overtime last weekend against No. 16 Syracuse.
Senior midfielder Milena Redlingshoefer has the lead with six assists. Bannatyne and Redlingshoefer each have 11 shots.
Operating as the final member of the defense, senior goalkeeper Gianna Glatz and sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Howard have been splitting time between the pipes. Glatz has played in three games, letting up 5 goals and saving eight shots, while Howard has let in 2 goals and saved four.
The matchup with the Hawks takes place on Friday night at 3 p.m. in Piscataway, while the Delaware game is a 1 p.m. matchup in Newark, Delaware.
