Rutgers Gardens reopened today after closing due to a bear sighting, according to an email from the Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD).

The Daily Targum previously reported a black bear was spotted near Rutgers Gardens and Ryders Lane on June 8, then again on June 9 in the area between Lipman Drive and Ryders Lane / Cobb Road.

The RUPD shared tips from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, advising students to avoid feeding or approaching bears or other wild animals. If a bear is spotted, remain calm, avoid eye contact and avoid running away from the animal.

Those who encounter bears should make the animal aware of their presence by speaking in an assertive voice, singing, clapping or making other noises.

If bitten or scratched by an animal, seek medical attention immediately and report any exposures to the RUPD.
