Spice up your throwback playlist with these 2000s bops
Oh, the 2000s: the decade of brilliant it-girl pop stars, skinny jeans and Club Penguin. Remember coming home from school and instant messaging your friends on your iPod to meet up at the park? Things were so simple back then.
With spring break upon us and the weather getting warmer, it's time to dust off our iPod shuffles and enjoy our time off with some jams.
That being said, so much has changed in the past year and for many of us, spring break won't be the same as it once was. So if you're feeling nostalgic, here are the perfect 2000s bops to add to your playlist:
“Yeah!” — Usher feat. Lil Jon and Ludacris
"Yeah!" is absolutely a throwback playlist staple. You can’t tell me this wasn’t the most fun song at your cafeteria school dances!
“Crazy In Love” — Beyoncé feat. JAY-Z
I can’t believe we’re allowed to share the same ground as this power couple. This pumped-up track was Beyoncé’s debut solo smash since her departure from Destiny’s Child, and it truly holds a sassy, bold energy like no other.
“Hollaback Girl” — Gwen Stefani
Not only did Stefani teach us all how to spell the word “bananas,” but also this female-empowerment anthem packed a punch with its message of teaching young girls to stand up for themselves against an electrifying pop beat.
“Work It” — Missy Elliott
Put your thing down, flip it and reverse it (socially distanced, of course).
“Umbrella” — Rihanna feat. JAY-Z
If you find yourself in your bag over break, transport yourself back in time with this addictive, 100 percent karaoke material 2007 summer hit by the queen herself.
“Bad Romance” — Lady Gaga
This seductive pop anthem by the iconic Lady Gaga is a timeless classic. Gaga has had her foot on the neck of pop for decades, and with the resurgence of this track all over TikTok, it's undeniable that this song is irresistible.
“4 Minutes” — Madonna feat. Justin Timberlake and Timbaland
Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Madonna? A trio made in a pop heaven. Personally, this is one of my favorite songs of the decade. I remember routinely playing this in my headphones in the back of my mom’s minivan — talk about nostalgia!
With its catchy hook, melody and bad b**** energy lyrics, this girl-anthem is a must-add to your spring break playlist (especially during Women’s History Month).
“Candy Shop” — 50 Cent feat. Olivia
No, not the most appropriate song for us to grow up listening to, but now there’s no excuse to not turn the volume all the way up. Also, as a classic club song, we can not only pretend we’re back in the 2000s, but also we can also imagine we’re partying in a club again (and who doesn’t miss that?).
This tribute to '70s disco by the recently retired Daft Punk is a house music must-play for staying pumped up all break long.
While the pandemic still is very much a thing and most college students are living at home this semester, spring break might feel different this year. But this doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun! Adding these 2000s throwback hits to your playlist this week is a guaranteed formula for carefree fun that is essential now more than ever.
