The Rutgers women’s soccer team had a great offensive attack that lead to victory against Maryland 5-2 yesterday. The No. 9 Scarlet Knights (12-2-0, 7-0-0) remain undefeated in Big Ten play with their eighth straight win overall.

Senior forward Amirah Ali opened the scoring early in the 8th minute with an assist from freshman forward Riley Tiernan. Rutgers scored less than a minute later after the Terrapins (4-7-4, 0-5-2) committed a foul in the box. Sophomore midfielder Becci Fluchel scored from the penalty spot to make the game 2-0. Fluchel’s goal marked her third penalty attempt and third penalty goal of her career.

Maryland responded 3 minutes later with a goal from Loren Sefcik and an assist from Mikayla Dayes. The Knights then countered and scored in the 16th minute with a second Fluchel goal.

The Terrapins committed another foul in their box and awarded junior back Allison Lowrey another penalty kick goal for Rutgers, her third goal of the season. This put the Knights up 4-1 at the half.

Rutgers rounded off its scoring with a goal from senior midfielder Frankie Tagliaferri, her 11th of the season. Tiernan bagged her second assist of the game, making this her ninth assist of the season. Both players lead their team and the conference in their respective categories.

Maryland scored the final goal of the match in the 62nd minute. Catherine DeRosa, who was assisted by Dayes, cut into the deficit but could not lead a full comeback. The Terrapins lost in their last outing as well against the Knights’ rival, Penn State, 5-1.

Rutgers is dominating the field, having the only perfect record in Big Ten play. It leads every other team on shots, goals and assists. Coming off a clean sheet victory against Iowa, the Knights are preparing for Michigan State on Sunday.

Rutgers will be playing at Yurcak Field at 1 p.m. this Sunday. The match will be streamed on Big Ten Network+ and broadcast for radio listeners on 88.7 WRSU. Live stats will be provided at kickoff.
