The beginning of the school year means one thing: new, fresh fall fashion. Whether you're on an EE, sitting in lecture or grabbing lunch in the dining hall, Rutgers students can be seen sporting the latest fall trends. Let’s take a look at what trends made it from the runway to Rutgers this semester.
If there's anything we can conclude from this year, it's that 2015 is clearly the new 1990. Everywhere I go, I spot a ‘90s blast from the past. Right now, the holy grail of accessories seems to be the choker. Now I have an excuse to wear my mom’s vintage velvet choker! It even has a heart charm attached to it — I know, too much ‘90s to handle.
Want to channel your inner ‘90s? Try raiding your mom’s closet the next time you visit home, or hit up a local thrift store like Holy Shirt on 14 Stone St., located right off of College Avenue, to score some major vintage finds.
Leather is not just for jackets this fall season. Be prepared to catch leather boots on every corner of New Brunswick, particularly ankle boots.
It wouldn't be ‘90s fashion without paying tribute to grunge. So if you're looking for something edgy that screams comfort, pair black ankle boots with black skinny jeans and a black leather jacket to get a sophisticated, yet edgy ensemble that you can wear from early morning lecture to late-night party.
Brenna Mazur, a Rutgers Business School first-year student, said she has noticed more people embracing the trend, sporting vintage clothing items like boots.
“Two trends I have definitely been noticing are ankle boots and T-shirt dresses,” she said.
Are boots not your thing? Not a problem. Trainers of all sorts have been a major trend spotted on the runway. Designers used everything from glitter to holograms for sneaker looks. If statement shoes are not your speed, have no fear — classic white leather sneakers are very in style as well.
Everything from bright Nikes to classic Adidas Superstars have been the most coveted sneakers of this season, which is great news if you do a lot of walking around campus. Pair sneakers with skinny jeans, skirts, sweaters or anything really — it's your call!
If you want to channel the color palette of fall, you are going to have to lean toward certain stylish hues. Colors that are trending this season are different variations of greens, yellows and browns.
Alex Arbeitel, Rutgers Her Campus correspondent said color is a major component of this year’s fall trends.
“I think that yellowish browns are going to be very in," the School of Arts and Sciences sophomore said. "I have also been seeing a lot of medium to dark greens."
If you take a look around the dining halls, it's evident these fashion staples have now made a comeback.
Feeling nostalgic? With the cold weather encroaching, pair some a dark colored flannel over a vintage graphic tee with your favorite jean wash. Add some proportion to your look by slipping into a leather jacket, cuffing the ends of your jeans and throwing on your converse.
The most important thing to remember about fall fashion? Make it your own and wear what makes you feel comfortable, Rutgers is your runway!
